FAQs

What are implementation hours?

Your employer will be utilising the Growth and Skills Levy as a way to fund your apprenticeship training programme. As a result the government requires that all learners must complete a set amount of learning hours across the duration of their course towards the programmes knowledge, skills and behaviours. These are the implementation hours you need to complete (often called the 'Off-the-Job' training requirement.)

Implementation hours are a key part of every Apprenticeship programme, regardless of the level or standard. Apprentices are required to log around 24-30 hours per month (depending on duration) as learning towards their apprenticeship - pro-rata for part time employees.

How will I find all those hours?

Primary Goal implementation hours are carefully structured to ensure every apprentice meets the required minimum for their chosen apprenticeship. These tend to come from two main sources:

1. Each week Primary Goal will provide learning opportunities for you to count towards your hours. There is a huge menu to choose from including coaching sessions, live topic of the month group sessions, and a wide selection of webinars like Microsoft, Apple, Google and lots of apps for automation, projects, data dashboards, communication and many different teaching Apps.

2. Alongside this, most apprentices make up the bulk of their hours from learning experiences that are naturally occurring in the workplace that can count towards their monthly targets. This could be shadowing colleagues, attending meetings, conferences, personal CPD or trying out new tools to gain feedback as part of the learning experience.

How long do apprenticeships last?

Typically 12–18 months depending on the programme level. This provides enough time to build meaningful skills that are retained long-term whilst delivering consistent impact in your role.

However, for 2026 the apprenticeship rules have changed slightly, meaning that we are now able to deliver shorter more compact 'Apprenticeship Units'. Initially, we have created three AI Leadership Units that have a duration of 30 hours each.

What is my portfolio?

Your portfolio is a curated collection of work, projects, and documents that proves your competence in the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) required for your qualification. It is a vital tool used for your ongoing progress reviews and your final End-Point Assessment (EPA).

A strong portfolio highlights your best, most relevant work rather than a high volume of minor tasks.

Where do I submit implementation (OTJ) hours?

You will document your implementation hours in an Excel workbook, which will then be submitted into Aptem at the end of each month.
